Well-Armed Woman

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Oklahoma shooting range near meTollie Prall was a well-armed woman long before it was trendy or cool. When she and her husband, Jim, purchased Sports World in 1976, it was a 1,200-square-foot nook for shoppers who appreciated the Great Outdoors. That was back when women were just starting to enter the workforce, and long before they took an interest in firearms. Now, thanks to Tollie’s and Jim’s ability to read the market and respond to customer needs, Sports World is a 16,000-square-foot Hunting Headquarters known for its huge selection of firearms and related accessories.

Sports World has the guns, accessories and apparel to suit every style of shooter, at every level of proficiency. New to Firearms?

It’s no secret that firearms have grown in popularity with women over the last 20 years. From 2001 to 2011, women’s participation in target shooting sports increased by more than 50 percent. In the same time period, female hunters grew by nearly 42 percent, according to the National Sporting Goods Association.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation says a growing number of women are buying guns for self defense.

According to the foundation, dealers attribute a 20-percent increase in shooting and hunting-related sales from 2010 to 2015 to women.

Manufacturers are gearing their marketing efforts toward women with smaller handguns and more feminine products like the ones above.

Women’s shooting clubs are also growing in popularity. A Girl and a Gun Women’s Shooting League has a chapter at the United States Shooting Academy at 6500 East 66th Street North in Tulsa. According to the group’s website, “A Girl & A Gun Women’s Shooting League is a ladies-only organization established by women shooters for women pistol, rifle, and shotgun shooters! The league is designed to take beginners to whatever skill level they wish to achieve and provide experienced shooters with more opportunities. The objective of some is to improve their skill levels for self-defense and competitive shooting. Others also are interested in learning how to choose the right guns, gear, and accessories for long-term participation in the community.”

Broken Arrow is home to a chapter of The Well-Armed Woman, which, according to the group’s website, “exists to educate and empower women in a non-threatening environment for their effective and responsible self-defense with a firearm.”

We compiled a list of shooting ranges near Tulsa. Many of them offer classes for beginners and for those seeking to apply for a concealed carry permit.
